Two fabrics can look identical under store lighting and behave nothing alike in wear, because “silk” and “satin” answer different questions. Silk is a fiber — a protein filament unwound from the cocoon of a silkworm. Satin is a weave — a structure where warp yarns float over four or more weft yarns, leaving long unbroken floats that reflect light in a glossy face. Any filament fiber can be woven into satin; that is why the label, not the shine, tells you what you are holding.
The satin float structure explains the signature sheen: minimizing yarn intersections leaves a smooth surface area that maximizes specular reflection, and the same structure appears across very different materials. Woven in silk, the construction is called charmeuse and drapes with fluid weight. Woven in polyester, it produces the shiny, wrinkle-resistant fabric sold as basic “satin” pillowcases and slip dresses. Woven in short-staple cotton, the same family of weaves is called sateen, with a softer, lower gloss — which is why a sateen label almost always means cotton while a satin label means a filament fiber, usually synthetic unless silk is named.
This is also why “silky,” “silky feel” and “satin finish” are feel words, not material words. Textile labeling guides aimed at US shoppers point out that the FTC requires most textile products to state fiber content, country of origin and manufacturer on the label (16 CFR 303), so a listing that leans on sheen language without naming a fiber is withholding the one fact that matters.
Silk itself splits into grades. Mulberry silk comes from silkworms raised on a controlled diet of mulberry leaves; the filament is continuous, round and uniform, which produces the smoothest surface and the cool, warming hand feel that protein fiber is known for. Tussah silk — from wild or semi-wild silkworms — uses shorter, irregular fibers with a more textured, matte hand, generally at a lower price.
The synthetic stand-ins each behave differently. Polyester satin is petrochemical filament: extremely abrasion-resistant and completely wrinkle-resistant, but with a moisture regain near 0.4%, so it traps heat and builds static. Rayon and acetate satins are semi-synthetic cellulose options with a crisp drape but poor wet strength. Silk sits at the other end of the moisture scale — a regain near 11% by the ASTM D1909 commercial regain tables — which is the technical basis for its temperature regulation and its tendency to crease rather than spring back.
Momme (often written “mm”) is silk’s density measure, traditionally the weight in pounds of a standard piece of cloth 100 yards by 45 inches. Sixteen to nineteen momme suits blouses, slips and scarves; nineteen is the everyday apparel standard; 22 to 25 feels plush and close-woven, the usual recommendation for pillowcases and gowns; thirty feels substantial but less fluid. Momme compares density within silk only — a 22-momme silk and a 19-momme silk differ in substance, but momme says nothing about authenticity, which is why fiber content belongs first in any decision order.
The protein fiber and the petrochemical filament want opposite handling. Silk tolerates hand washing or dry cleaning in cool water with gentle detergent and no chlorine bleach; heat and wringing distort it, and unfinished sericin — the gum silk is degummed of during finishing — is part of why raw silk feels rough. Polyester satin shrugs off machine washing, which is exactly why budget satin care tags read so differently from silk ones. Textile professionals verify ambiguous fabric with a burn test on a swatch — silk, a protein, burns slowly and smells of burning hair leaving crushable ash, while polyester melts into a hard plastic bead — but that is a lab-side method on a cutting, not something to run on a finished garment.
Mulberry silk fiber costs roughly four to five times as much as synthetic filament raw material, and reeling continuous filament from cocoons cannot be industrialized the way polymer extrusion can. That cost is driven by the fiber, not the weave: silk satin costs about the same as other silk of equal momme weight, and polyester satin costs about the same as other polyester. When a “satin” piece is priced like the synthetic it usually is, the label history is the honest explanation — the weave kept its luxury name long after the silk left it.
